Chocolate Pie

by Michael Chitwood
Southern Cultures, Vol. 18, No. 2: Food

both sweet and bitter, like that afternoon

The woman who made it
hadn’t been to church
in years, except for there
at the crimped dough edges
and beaten-egg cumulus
of the browned meringue,
and beneath it, the pudding,
both sweet and bitter,
like that afternoon,
so long ago,
just the two of us,
talking a little, eating.

Ed. note: We asked poetry editor Mike Chitwood to share one of his poems for this special issue. We are pleased to debut “Chocolate Pie” in our pages.
