Country Music’s Mythology

I Saw Sissy

by Sharony Green

“And some of us so country and so baaaad / like the daddy on Good Times when he gets up to / find a Western on TV and he pretends to be / John Wayne while he doing it”

I saw Sissy in Urban Cowboy
A woman riding on a mechanical bull
could make men wake up for however long
I’m a Black girl from Miami who grew up watching
Heeeeee
Haw!
who joined two yellow buses filled with Black kids in
integrating an elementary school where a balding white man
in white tennis shorts
and a white polo
and white bucket hat
made square dance calls using a megaphone
and we jumped right on in
as had the ancestors with their ring shouts.
