The Nanih Bvlbancha Mound

It was a two-hour drive from New Orleans to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, in the sweltering heat of summer 2024, when I first met Dr. Tammy Greer. Just the day before, I had taken an early morning walk to Nanih Bvlbancha at Lafitte Greenway, a project she helped bring to life alongside a collaborative group of artists and educators. Dr. Greer greeted me as I arrived at the Library of Hattiesburg Petal & Forrest County. Her long pink hair and spoken cadence immediately made an impression. As I made my way home, it struck me just how much I respected Dr. Greer—an awareness that came alongside an unfamiliar ache in my back. I suddenly realized the source of the discomfort: I had been sitting up straighter than usual, a subtle yet telling reflection of how I thought of her.
