This Is Country Music

Rissi Palmer, by Amanda López

On view now at the Center for the Study for the American South, portraits from Amanda López’s ongoing documentary project, “This Is Country Music.” As Lopez writes in the Country Music’s Mythology issue of Southern Cultures, “My project . . . was born from a desire to reclaim my space in the genre and amplify the voices of women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ artists and change makers in the best way I know how. They say country music is three chords and the truth. This project aims to make it so.”

Join us for an exhibit reception on April 9, featuring a performance by musicians Rissi Palmer and Frankie Staton, who will also be in conversation with SC guest editor Amanda Martínez.
